🎉 UKM Malay Language Carnival: Games, Culture & Fun with Words!
Hey everyone! 👋 This weekend, UKM’s campus was bursting with colors, laughter, and the sweet sound of Bahasa Malaysia—all thanks to the Malay Language Carnival organized by our Malay language class. As an international student eager to pick up more Malay, I jumped at the chance to join, and it turned out to be one of the most fun (and educational!) afternoons I’ve had at UKM so far.
The carnival was set up in a big open area near the faculty building, with vibrant stalls decorated in red, yellow, and green—traditional Malay colors. Each stall hosted a different game, and the rule was simple: complete 5 games to get a small prize (a cute Malay-themed keychain, which I immediately attached to my bag!). Let me take you through my adventure!
🎪 My 5 Carnival Games Adventure
1. Malay Traditional Costume Experience 🧕👘
First stop: the costume stall! I’ve always been fascinated by Malay traditional clothing, so I was thrilled to try on a baju kurung—a beautiful long dress paired with a songket (woven scarf). The volunteers helped me tie the scarf neatly and even added a small flower hairpin. It felt so elegant and special! My friend took a photo of me in the outfit, which I’ll definitely be sharing here. Wearing the costume made me feel more connected to the culture, not just learning the language.
2. Malay Word Matching Game 📝
Next up was a brain teaser: a word matching game. The stall had two sets of cards—one with Malay words (like makan, minum, rumah) and the other with their English meanings. I had to match them as fast as possible. At first, I stumbled a little with some tricky words, but the volunteer gave me gentle hints. By the end, I finished in 1 minute flat and got a stamp for my card. It was a fun way to review the vocabulary we’ve learned in class!
3. Pictionary: Malay Edition 🎨
This was my favorite game! It’s the classic “you draw, I guess” but with Malay words. I paired up with a local student, and we took turns drawing. When it was my turn, I had to draw ikan (fish)—easy! But when she drew a tiny house with smoke, I struggled a bit before guessing kampung (village). We laughed so hard at our messy drawings, and I even learned a few new words from the other pairs. It’s amazing how art can bridge language gaps!
4. Malay Food Trivia Quiz 🍛
As a food lover, this stall was right up my alley! The volunteer asked me questions about Malay dishes, like “What is the main ingredient in nasi lemak?” (coconut rice, of course!) and “What do Malaysians eat during Hari Raya?” (ketupat). I got most answers right—thanks to all the times I’ve tried local food on campus! The volunteer was impressed and gave me an extra sticker for my efforts.
5. Tongue Twister Challenge 🗣️
Last but not least: the tongue twister challenge. Malay tongue twisters are no joke! I had to say “Saya suka makan sayur” (I like to eat vegetables) three times fast without stumbling. At first, I messed up the words and turned red from laughing, but after a few tries, I nailed it. The crowd cheered, and I finally collected my 5th stamp—mission accomplished!
✨ More Than Just Games
By the end of the carnival, my cheeks hurt from smiling, and my brain was full of new Malay words. What I loved most wasn’t just winning the prize—it was the chance to interact with local students and teachers in a relaxed, fun setting. Learning a language isn’t just about textbooks; it’s about experiencing the culture, laughing at mistakes, and making connections.
I also took a photo of the carnival’s main stage (the one I’m sharing here)—it was decorated with lanterns and traditional patterns, making the whole event feel even more festive and authentic.
This carnival didn’t just make me fall more in love with Malay language and culture—it also gave me great memories to cherish during my time at UKM. I can’t wait for next year’s event! 🥰
